Gator By the Bay –
San Diego’s Cajun, Zydeco and Blues Festival
May 11 -13
We’ve Got Free Tickets!
On Mother’s Day weekend, the 11th Annual Gator By The Bay Festival brings the joie de vivre of the Louisiana bayou to San Diego, with 8000 pounds of crawfish and some of the hottest Blues, Cajun, and zydeco, music around. The festival is expected to draw over 12,000 attendees that will experience over 70 performances on 5 stages, fantastic food, dance lessons, cooking demos, dancing, family activities, and a ton of fun!
At the heart of Gator By the Bay is the good time Cajun and Zydeco music and culture from Southwest Louisiana. Accordian and fiddle driven Cajun music stems from the traditions of the state’s French Acadians (aka Cajuns) who have lived in the bayou country since the 1700s. Zydeco, the rollicking, up-tempo music of the Creole people, is the wilder, looser sister to Cajun music, taking the lively airs and soulful waltzes and infusing them with African, Caribbean and even Native American influences. This is music made for dancing!
Presented this year by the State of Louisiana Office of Tourism, and made possible through both public and private local sponsorship, as well as sponsorship from the Louisiana cities of New Orleans, Lafayette, Lake Charles, and Jefferson Davis Parish, the exceptional star-studded line-up includes the hottest zydeco and Cajun bands in the country, some smoking hot blues, and healthy doses of swing and alternative country music. All ticket holders will be entered in the Visit Louisiana Sweepstakes, with a chance to win a four day trip to New Orleans or the Bayou Country.
The straight from Louisiana zydeco headliners include 2010 Grammy winner and third generation zydeco artist, Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, performing all three days, and Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band, who take the stage both Saturday and Sunday, with an additional performance during a special Saturday night dance.
Cajun music headliners Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, playing Saturday and Sunday, are internationally known for their stunningly performances of Cajun French music and for their tight vocal harmonies. Their energy, popularity and musicianship have garnered them four Grammy nominations. The all-woman Bonsoir Catin, playing all three days, is one of South Louisiana's most exciting new Cajun bands. The legendary Commander Cody headlines the blues/Americana lineup with a performance on Saturday afternoon. Commander Cody fuses country, swing, boogie woogie, and old-time rock’n’roll. One of his biggest hits is “Hot Rod Lincoln.” Other performing artists include Ian Dunlop on Sunday afternoon, local blues headliners: Bill Magee Blues Band, Sue Palmer, The Bayou Brothers, Billy Lee & the Swamp Critters, San Diego Cajun Playboys, Euphoria Brass Band, and Three Chord Justice.
Free shuttles will be available from select parking areas on Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are available at GatorBytheBay.com or at the gate. Prices at the gate are Friday: $25, Saturday $30, Sunday $30. Save $5 each day by ordering in advance online.

15th Annual American Heritage Car Show
May 26, Saturday, 9am-3pm
If you like to check out fabulous vehicles in a beautiful setting, Grape Day Park is the place to be on Saturday, May 26. That’s when the 15th Annual American Heritage Car Show roars into the park. With close to 250 vehicles parked on grass, this is one of the nicest car shows anywhere. Start the day off at 9am with a delicious pancake breakfast. Then, walk the park to find your favorite car, while listening to a DJ spinning classic rock ‘n roll tunes. Buy some raffle tickets and you might win a fabulous prize. Local car dealers sponsor this show, which benefits the non-profit Escondido History Center. They’ll be on site with some new cars for you to see, too. Vendors offer a variety of merchandise, but you don’t need to spend any money to enjoy the American Heritage Car Show. Spectators are free, and so are tours of the Escondido History Center.
The local history museum includes a number of different buildings. The city’s original train station from 1888 takes you back to a time when agriculture was king. Kids love the 1929 railroad car, which has an HO scale model train inside. The 1901 barn features an agricultural display, and everyone loves watching blacksmiths at work inside the Bandy Blacksmith Shop. The Victorian Country Home, built in 1890, illustrates what life was like in 1900 with antique furnishing and a wonderful textile collection. A windmill, tankhouse, and Native American metate are also part of the museum.
Twenty-three awards are given out in a fun ceremony at 2:30pm where all the winners get the chance to talk about their rides. Entrants vote for their 20 favorite vehicles. Additional awards are given for Best of Show and Mayor’s Choice. People’s Choice is given to the vehicle with the most votes.
The 2012 car show honors Randy Clark of Hot Rods & Custom Stuff. Clark has built a nationally recognized business doing what he loves: restoring old cars. His meticulous work is regularly featured in hot rod magazines. You’ll get the chance to see his fantastic work up close and meet the hometown hero of Escondido’s car culture.
Spectators always free, vehicle entry $25. The show takes place at Grape Day Park, 321 N. Broadway, Escondido. For more information, call (760) 743-8207 or visit www.escondidohistory.org.

Mother’s Day Weekend Art & Garden Tour, A North County Tradition
May 12 & 13, Saturday & Sunday, 10am-4pm
San Dieguito Art Guild is pleased to announce its 18th Annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art and Garden Tour on Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13, from 10am-4pm. This year’s self-guided tour of nine unique gardens meanders through the nostalgic beach town of Leucadia, then east through New Encinitas, and onto the winding rural roads past the estates of historic Olivenhain. The gardens are easily accessible in a day, but nevertheless many visitors choose to take both days to complete the tour.
Each elegant private garden features several San Dieguito Art Guild members who have their artwork on display and for sale. All art pieces, priced directly from the artists, are original (nothing mass produced or imported) and include paintings, original drawings, fine art photography, sculptures, unique glass, metal and gourd art, and one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry.
The San Dieguito Art Guild, established in 1965, is a nonprofit organization that offers continuing art education to its members and the community at large. The Guild also operates the Off Track Gallery in Encinitas as a place for its artist-members to showcase and sell their art. “This is an opportunity to give the gift of time to the moms in our lives,” says Grace Swanson, long-time member of the Guild and an exhibiting artist. “It’s the perfect way to spend a day. And because each home will serve an ample assortment of refreshments, folks can skip the crowded restaurants this year.”
“The Art and Garden Tour is an annual fundraiser that helps support the Guild’s operating expenses as well as art programs that benefit the community, such as the ‘Try It You’ll Like It’ workshops,” says San Dieguito Art Guild President, Cheryl Ehlers. “We’re also excited to use a portion of the event’s proceeds to provide a cash grant to an underserved high school art department in our community.”
Tickets are $20 per person and cover admission for both Saturday and Sunday, and include a souvenir booklet and map with driving directions to each location. Ticket holders can feel free to re-visit a favorite home or split their visits over the weekend. Tickets may be purchased as of April 1, either online or in person at the Off Track Gallery, 937 South Coast Highway 101, Suite C103 (in the Lumberyard Shopping Center behind St. Tropez Bakery) in Encinitas, CA. Tickets may also be purchased at any of the featured homes during the event.
For more information about the 18th Annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art and Garden Tour, please contact the Art Guild at (760) 942-3636 or go online at www.offtrackgallery.com.

Plan a trip to Stanton Iris Gardens in Valley Center

Their new “Star Kisses” and Good Morning Beautiful” according to Stanton, are “much better than the other stuff out there.”
