7 Year Old Connie Talbot, Britain’s Young Singing Sensation, Set to Conquer America!

In 2007, an aspiring singer stepped onto the soundstage of England’s enormously popular TV program Britain’s Got Talent, flashed an adorable gap-toothed smile and instantly won the heart of the notoriously crusty Simon Cowell—yes, that Simon Cowell—as well as the British viewing public. In just a couple of minutes, a true star had been born.

In the past year that young lady has become an international phenomenon, with millions of YouTube views, glowing media coverage and a best-selling album—a feat made all the more remarkable by the fact that Connie Talbot is all of 7 years old.

Over the Rainbow, Connie Talbot’s debut album, went gold in the U.K. in three weeks, and is set for release in the United States on September 30th by AAO Music/Reality. Now it’s America’s turn to experience Conniemania!

“We're looking forward to working with Connie and her family,” said AAO chairman Peter Kuys. “She's a happy, charming, innocent child with an exceptional talent. We’re an artist and people-driven label where she will fit right in.”

When we asked Connie how she felt the first time performing in front of Simon Cowell, Connie replied, “ I was fine. I wasn’t nervous. He’s just a normal person.”

Is Simon now your manager? “ No, Simon thinks I’m a bit young,” she answered.

We also asked Connie a couple of other questions...

Does your mom or dad or anyone else in your family sing? Connie said, “Ummm, not really, my dad likes to sing, and my Nan (grandmother) used to sing.

Where are you going to be in America? She said, “I’m coming to New York and California in October.”

What is your favorite dessert? “I like ice cream. My favorite is Vanilla,” Connie replied.

Over the Rainbow is, of course, named after the timeless classic from The Wizard of Oz, and it was with the album’s title song that Connie first dazzled British audiences. Cowell, one of the three judges of Britain’s Got Talent—the same role he so famously performs on American Idol—was left uncharacteristically speechless, declaring Connie’s pure, angelic rendition “fantastic” and commending her for her “pitch-perfect” vocal on the Judy Garland standard.

Although she ultimately came in second place in the British contest, word of Connie’s prodigious talent spread rapidly. Asian music fans, in particular, went wild for her—Over the Rainbow became a platinum album reaching the number one spot in Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong and came close to that in Singapore. When Connie toured Asia following the release of the album there, she was received with wild enthusiasm.

But that has been par for the course since she first appeared in front of audiences. The British newspaper Express & Star, covering one of Connie’s U.K. concert performances, reported, “Police had to calm frantic crowds as they clamored to get into a special tent to get a glimpse of Britain’s Got Talent TV star Connie Talbot… police threatened to stop last night’s show unless the crowds could be brought under control.”

The story of Connie Talbot’s meteoric rise is “fantastic” in itself. Connie, in her own words, had been “singing since I could talk,” but when she auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent her family was only looking for something fun to do that day. The euphoric response by viewers and judges alike quickly catapulted the pint-sized songstress into the spotlight. As of this writing, videos of Connie have been watched more than 44 million times on YouTube. On July 16, she will have the honor of performing at the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund Annual Gala Dinner, in London.

Over the Rainbow, produced and mixed by Simon Hill and Rob May, was recorded last fall in an aunt’s spare bedroom so that Connie, who lives in the town of Streetly in West Midlands, would not lose valuable school time. The album is filled with Connie’s stirring interpretations of such classics as “I Will Always Love You,” “Imagine,” “Ben,” “My Favorite Things” and “What a Wonderful World,” even a cover of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds.”

“I’m really looking forward to coming to America to do some singing, meet new people, and make some new friends!” said Connie when asked about her impending introduction across the Atlantic.

And America is certainly looking forward to meeting her. Already, Connie Talbot’s recordings have sold in large quantities as imports; she’s got many fans in the United States without having sung a lick here, and a definite buzz is in the air: Plans are in the works for the young star to sing duets with major American artists, and to appear on some of the States’ most popular entertainment TV programs.

The future is limitless for this talented, delightful young singer, who has already come so far in the year since her debut. Just how far? Well, where that space in her mouth used to be, now there are two beautiful new front teeth!

FOO FIGHTERS AND ZZ TOP CO-HEADLINE REVVED-UP CONCERT AND JAY LENO RETURNS AS GRAND MARSHALL FOR LOVE RIDE

OCTOBER 26

The world famous LOVE RIDE, the largest 1-day motorcycle fundraising event, and featured event of California Bike Week, will be bigger and more spectacular than ever this year as it celebrates the Silver Anniversary LOVE RIDE 25, slated for Sunday, October 26, 2008. The ride is always capped with a star-studded concert, which this year kicks things into the highest possible gear with a bill co-headlined by Rock and Roll Hall of Famers ZZ Top and alt-rock icons Foo Fighters, 2007 GRAMMY® winners for Best Rock Album. The concert, expected to draw a capacity crowd at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA, will include a barbecue lunch, motorcycle trade show and vendor village, stunts, award ceremonies and more.

LOVE RIDE Founder & Chairman Oliver Shokouh, owner of Harley-Davidson® of Glendale, says, “We couldn’t be more excited about the generosity shown by the Foo Fighters and ZZ Top in agreeing to co-headline LOVE RIDE 25. It truly makes our Silver Anniversary something special. With the help of our volunteers and these great bands, we’re hoping to make this LOVE RIDE our biggest fundraiser ever.”

Also adding superstar wattage to LOVE RIDE 25 is Jay Leno, who’s served as Grand Marshall since the inception of the ride. Once again, he’ll preside this year as approximately 25,000 bikers from around the world – including a host of celebrity riders – convene in Glendale, CA for the benefit, which has raised over $20 million for various charities throughout the years. In keeping with tradition, the benefit will begin at 6AM at Harley-Davidson® of Glendale (3717 San Fernando Rd., Glendale, 91204) with riders starting their engines at 9AM and parading up Glendale’s main drag, Brand Boulevard, before making their way over to Pomona, where Fairplex gates are scheduled to open at 10AM.

Shokouh, inducted into the prestigious Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame in South Dakota in honor of his remarkable accomplishments with the LOVE RIDE, launched the event in 1984 as a means to raise much needed funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The annual event now channels funds to a diverse array of non-profit organizations, mostly local Southern California and children’s charities. With everything planned for this year, LOVE RIDE 25 is poised to break all previous giving records.

LOVE RIDE 25 is the centerpiece of California Bike Week (CBW), the state’s premiere motorcycle event, taking place Oct. 24-26 at Fairplex Pomona. CBW highlights also include music from The Blasters and Lee Rocker, hot rods and tattoos on 10/24 plus world-class flat track racing with the Pacific Coast Nationals on 10/25, motorcycle stunt shows, motorcycle rides in custom show, free demo rides by major motorcycle manufacturers, the Wall of Death and more. Other weekend events include a LOVE RIDE reception party on 10/24 at Los Angeles’ Petersen Automotive Museum featuring a special preview of the Bonham & Butterfield’s motorcycle auction the next day (Oct. 25).

LOVE RIDE 25 experience tickets may be purchased at www.loveride.org as well as in person at Harley-Davidson®/Buell of Glendale and through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com). General admission tickets for the LOVE RIDE concert and tickets for CBW events can be purchased through Ticketmaster. 38TH ANNUAL BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL IN JULIAN

September 20, Saturday – 9am-6pm

September 21, Sunday – 9am-4pm

For thirty-eight years the Julian Bluegrass Festival has brought the traditions of bluegrass music to Americana music lovers who make the journey to Frank Lane Park in the Cuyamaca Mountains of Julian each fall. On Saturday from 9am-6pm, and Sunday from 9am-4pm, music is the language that unites people from across the state.

There will be workshops galore, including Slide Guitar, Fiddle Improvisation, Bluegrass Vocals, Mandolin Technique, Clawhammer/Frailing Banjo, Guitar Techniques, Bluegrass Banjo and Upright/Wash Tub Bass. Frank Lane Park will be vibrating with energy, but when you're not engrossed in the music you can get involved in the instrument petting zoo, the art vendors and don't forget to bring your instruments for the open jam session.

Bring your own beach chairs, and don’t forget your sunscreen and hat. Be aware that the terrain in the park is steep and uneven; consequently, people with limited mobility may have difficulty. You’ll have to leave Fido at home because no dogs are allowed in the park

The Bluegrass Festival is presented by the Julian Lions Club. Frank Lane Park is located at 2645 Farmers Road, Julian. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Julian Chamber of Commerce at the Park or on the day of the event, or online at www.julianbluegrassfestival.com.

24th ANNUAL STREET SCENE RETURNS TO THE STREETS

Sept. 19 and 20, Saturday and Sunday

Rob Hagey began Street Scene in San Diego’s Gas Lamp District in 1984 when the Gas Lamp District was very different than it is today. According to Hagey, “The Gas Lamp was riddled with drugs and was a very seedy area. Of course, today it is much different.” The Gas Lamp is now well known for fine dining and live music establishments.

Two years ago Street Scene moved to Qualcomm Stadium, and last year, first scheduled for Del Mar Fairgrounds, Street Scene ended up at Coors Amphitheater. This year Hagey has partnered with Casbah owner Tim Mays and hopes to make a comeback, by going back to it’s roots, back to the streets, where it began so many years ago.

Last year was very different when Rob Hagey Productions partnered with Live Nation, the world’s largest live music company, and together they attempted a different kind of venue at Coors Amphitheater (now called Cricket Wireless Amphitheater). This year the venue returns to the heart of East Village incorporating 14th Street as the main thoroughfare, bordered by J Street to Imperial Avenue. The new digs plans to incorporate a Tailgate Park adjacent to Petco Park.

Appearing on stage:

Beck, The Black Crowes, The National, Spoon, Justice, TV On The Radio, Atmosphere, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Cat Power, Tegan and Sara, STS9, Hot Chip, The New Pornographers, X, Vampire Weekend, The Hives, Cold War Kids, Ghostland Observatory, Spiritualized, Antibalas, The Mother Hips, Man Man, Del The Funky Homosapien, Tokyo Police Club, The Night Marchers, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Foals, Dengue Fever, Chester French, and more!

An early purchase of a two-day festival ticket pass costs $75 and can be purchased on-line at www.street-scene.com.
