Yamaguchi Brings Feng Shui to Beauty

By: Cynthia Lewis

Who says beauty is only skin deep?

Certainly not the artists of the Yamaguchi Salon located at the exclusive La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad. It is one of six locations owned by the world-renowned stylist Billy Yamaguchi and his wife, Melissa. Yamaguchi is the first stylist to embrace the ancient Chinese principles of understanding and enhancing one’s energy through the five elements of fire, earth, water, metal and wood.

“I began my study of Feng Shui 14 years ago and found the principles of Feng Shui
aligned with my belief of the individual as a temple,” Yamaguchi says. “Feng Shui is a guide to understanding energy.”

Feng Shui is more commonly known to Westerners as a way to place an ottoman, an end table and a plant in a living room or an office but the energy-driven belief can also be applied to balancing one’s personal beauty and style.

“Our Feng Shui consultation is designed to offer our guests a clear roadmap on how better to reflect their inner beauty through their outward appearance,” Yamaguchi says. “This process has enriched our abilities to deliver truly personalized services and has helped us to properly prioritize the primary importance of the guest being an integral part of making the best-suited beauty decisions.”

The process begins with a survey that asks clients questions such as which color best describes their personality and what their hobbies are. From there, the stylist determines the client’s dominant element and how to incorporate it into a new look. The basic character trait breakdown is fire is expressive and artistic, Earth is natural and nurturing, Metal is disciplined and classic, Water is forward thinking and chic, and Wood is social and active. Hairstyles, color and makeup shades are determined by the individual’s lifestyle and personality rather than what the hottest A-lister is sporting.

“The biggest mistake in selecting a hairstyle is picking a style that looks great on a celebrity or model without any consideration of whether it fits your lifestyle, face shape, personality, or hair texture,” Yamaguchi says.

Along with hairstyles, feng shui beauty applies to make-up. Jacqueline Castro has worked at the La Costa Resort for over 30 years and says she was inspired to be a make-up artist to enhance natural beauty that comes from the inside without plastic surgery.

Castro selects a guest’s eye shadow shades and lip colors according to her element(s) and skin tone, which are classified as porcelain, milky, honey, ruby, ebony or olive. For a client with a water element and a milky skin tone for example, Castro would suggest charcoal eye-liner with peach or warm brown eye shadow and lip color from the palette of peach to nude to rust.

A Fire-Olive combination, however, should wear smoky eyes with soft colors such as mauve, gray, or black and berry colors on the lips.

Castro uses the Yamaguchi make-up line, an all- natural line that does not use harsh chemicals and is ideal for sensitive skin. Yamaguchi also carries a mineral make up line, which is the latest trend in make-up but Castro warns clients to go with what is ideal for their skin type rather than what has the highest sales that season. The fine powders and blushes of the Yamaguchi line have high shimmer and glow but have a soft texture that is light on skin.

In addition to make-up, Yamaguchi carries a full line of all natural ingredient hair products including Hair Therapy Soy Shampoo and Watercress Conditioner that leave hair silky smooth and heavenly aromatic. Other hair care products by Yamaguchi include Herbal Gel with aloe vera, Sake Hairspray and Green Tea Shape. All products are available at Yamauchi Salons or online at www.yamaguchibeauty.com.

What To Drink To Stay Properly Hydrated

By: Kristen Enyedi-Lewis

How you hydrate your body directly affects your energy balance and body weight, and what you drink is extremely important.

For the most part, we drink what’s available, and don’t think about it. When I used to teach at Lincoln Middle School, I drank Diet Cokes every day. While I drank the soda, I felt refreshed, but soon after I was thirsty again. Why? The sodium content in the Diet Coke, along with the artificial ingredients, put a severe strain on my system. Also, the caffeine pulled fluid from my body, basically defeating the reason I was drinking the soda in the first place.

The more you work out and the more you sweat the more water you will need to drink to stay hydrated. What and how much you drink are worth paying attention to because it affects your overall health.

As a certified personal trainer, lifestyle and weight management consultant and licensed sports nutritionist, I tell my clients that they should drink at least 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. The average person drinks 4-8 glasses of water a day. However, with exercise and an increase in temperature, that may not enough. On days that you are active, you need to add more water to your regime. Thirty minutes before you exercise, drink eight ounces of water and during your exercise routine drink 4-8 ounces every 10-15 minutes. After you exercise, drink 2-3 eight ounce glasses of water, according to ACE and ACSM. Drinking enough water afterwards will really improve your physical and mental recovery. If counting ounces boggles your mind, fill up a gallon jug of water and drink it throughout the day.

So, what do you do on days that you aren’t exercising? It is still important to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you are sitting under the sun you may need double that amount. Always make sure you have enough water on hand, especially at the beach or in the desert. Where water may be hard to find it’s a good idea to take along twice as much as you think you need. Try to drink water that was bottled as close to the source as possible.

It’s wise to replace the nutrients and minerals that you lose when you sweat. After a long workout I have a couple of organic apples on hand to eat. I also add a 3-to-1 ratio of carbs to protein (NASN) in my water when I anticipate a workout that will go over an hour. My favorite mixture calls for orange juice as my simple carb and a vanilla whey protein mix as my protein, added to a gallon jug of filtered water from my kitchen sink.

When you’re thirsty, alcohol, soda, artificially sweetened sodas and sports drinks may entice you, but try to keep it simple. The fewer ingredients a drink has, the more likely that it’s healthy, especially if you can actually pronounce the ingredients! If you find yourself giving in, do so in moderation. If you are a sucker for diet drinks, look for the ones sweetened with xylitol (birch sugar) and stevia (an herb); both are much healthier than the alternatives.

Gaining an education about your own mental and physical health takes time but it works a lot better than a temporary band aid. Sure, a side effect of staying properly hydrated is needing to use the bathroom more often; but it’s a sign that your body is properly hydrated and ridding itself of toxins. Think of all those health gains!

NEW WALL MOUNTED FIREPLACES HEATING UP THE MARKETPLACE

By: Andy Lee

Everyone knows about how fast technology is advancing with flat screen TVs. Now flat, wall mounted fireplaces are heating up the industry!

Wall mounted direct-vent gas fireplaces can hang on most walls, are easy to install and vent right out the back. Simple wall mounted support allows you to hang a fireplace on a flat wall or in a corner. The space you will save with a flat fireplace is amazing. The unit depth is less than six inches. Picture yourself sitting on your sofa in your family room or den looking at the wall in front of you with a flat screen TV mounted on the wall, and a flat fireplace just below. The space saving is enormous, and the style...exquisite!

One such fireplace is a Solas. Solas fireplaces, with automatic pilot ignitions, can be operated manually or by remote control. Flame height can be raised or lowered to achieve your desired effect. Equipped with a combination of reflective glass embers and porcelain enamel panels emit outstanding reflective radiant heat as well as several layers of fire light, all of which enhances the soothing fire effect. Hundreds of pieces of reflective glass cast light throughout the fireplace and surrounding room area.

Janie Patterson, of Fireplaces Plus, in San Marcos, says, “ This is really a hot little item. Come visit our showroom and see for yourself. They’re really quite something to see and experience.”

Fire Jacks are yet another new product this year, and Fireplaces Plus, to date, is the only US distributor of these new gas fireplace accoutrements. Inspired by the children’s game of ball and jacks, the slip-cast ceramic shapes are fun as well as elegant in appearance. A recent award winner by Homes and Gardens, and designed by British designer, Lynn Kingelin, Fire Jacks are a wonderful way to enhance your fire instead of using faux logs. Fire Jacks come in white, black, or gold metallic.

For all the latest in fireplaces and accessories, ask for Janie at Fireplaces Plus, located 1833 Diamond Street, San Marcos, CA 92078. Please mention you heard about the Solas wall mounted fireplace, and Fire Jacks in our publications. Call (760) 752-7789. Website is www.fireplacesplusinc.com.
